The Lafayette fencing team participated in the Penn State Open over the weekend at the Multi-Sport Indoor Facility. The meet was highlighted by freshman Zoe O’Connor, who finished in 27th place in the women’s epee and had a 4-7 record in pool play.

Rounding out the Leopard’s leaderboard on Saturday for the women’s epee was senior Lily Manetta who finished 40th and senior Elise Hummel who finished 42nd.

The Leopard’s top finisher in women’s saber was senior Carolyn Feigeles in 36th place with a 5-7 record in pool play. Senior Bella Moger was T-37th and 3-8 in pool play. Freshman Brooke Lippe and sophomore Amanda Manubag placed 45th and T-46th, respectively.

In women’s foil, sophomore Abby Schlotterbeck finished in 40th place, junior Danielle Long finished in 46th and freshman Anna Silver rounded out the top three Leopards in 48th.

Freshman Benito Hergert led the way for the Leopards in the men’s action on Sunday, finishing 28th in men’s foil and 4-7 in pool play.

Freshmen Chris Davis and Amir Whitehead placed T-35th and 37th respectively in men’s foil.

“Our team did very well, we were going up against hard teams and we held our own,” Whitehead said. “We had a lot of our fencers make it to the third round which is hard to do.”

The top Lafayette fencer in the men’s epee was freshman Antoine Mannes, where he finished T-31st with a 6-5 record in pool play. Sophomore Riley Anderson (43rd) and junior Grahame Ung (45th) rounded out the Leopards’ top three in men’s epee.

Senior William Mcalpine led the way for the Leopards in the men’s saber in 27th, and junior Matthew Decker was just behind in 28th.

“One takeaway is that we have a strong team and that when the regular season comes around, we can do some serious damage,” Whitehead said. “We can beat a lot of these teams that we are going up against. I’m excited for the season and I know we are going to do well.”

The Leopards are next in action on Nov. 14th at 10:00 a.m. at the Vassar Invite in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
