Women’s soccer (3-4-0) (0-0-0)

Sept. 7 @ Fairfield

L, 4-0

Despite sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Pohl’s nine saves, Lafayette’s offense was ineffective, taking a mere eight shots, none of which were on net. The women’s soccer is set to begin Patriot League play against Bucknell University this Saturday, September 15.

Men’s soccer (4-2-0) (0-0-0)

Sept. 7 vs. Cornell

L, 1-2

Junior forward James Gibson scored in the 22nd minute off of a corner assist from sophomore Andrew Venezia, to take a lead into half time. The lead would be maintained until Cornell scored in the 82nd minute to force overtime. Ultimately, Big Red scored the game winning goal in the 95th minute.

Sept. 12 vs La Salle

W, 2-0

Another day, another shutout for freshman goalkeeper Alex Sutton. Both Lafayette goals came in the first five minutes of each half, with freshman Sebastian Varela putting the Leopards on the board in the first half and junior Dylan Royalty extending the lead in the second.

Women’s volleyball (2-7) (0-0)

Sept. 7 vs. Boston College

Lafayette dropped the opening match of the tournament to undefeated Boston College. Freshman Leanna Deegan recorded nine kills and two digs.

Sept. 8 vs. Dartmouth, Siena

L, 3-0; L, 3-0

Freshmen Grace Tulevech and Leanna Deegan recorded seven kills apiece against Dartmouth to lead the team. Junior Katrina Ruggiero also contributed six kills and 11 digs in the match.
In the loss against Siena, freshman Kelly Austin, had a career high eight kills. Deegan contributed seven kills, in addition to Tulevech’s six kills.

Awards: Deegan’s 23 kills over the weekend earned her all tournament team honors.

Field hockey (0-5) (0-0)

Sept 7. vs. Temple

L, 3-2

Despite successive goals in the 35th and 37th minutes, the Leopards were unable to protect their lead and hold off the Temple offense. Sophomores Grace Angella and Anna Steps scored the respective first goals of the season. Junior goalie Sarah Park had five saves.

Sept. 9. vs. Maine

L, 1-5

The Black Bears scored early and took a commanding 3-0 lead into halftime, before putting the game out of reach in the 54th minute with their fifth goal of the day. Senior Liza Welch was able to put Lafayette on the board in the 63rd minute with her first goal of the season.

Men’s golf

Sept. 9. @ Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational Tournament

Men’s golf had quite the weekend, winning the Alex Lagowitz Memorial tournament, with a tournament record +3 (867). Sophomore Brendan Cronin set an individual tournament record, finishing -10 on the weekend, shattering the previous record of 4-under.

Football (0-2) (0-0)

Sept. 8 @ Delaware

L, 37-0

In another tough matchup the Leopards were shut out as Delaware scored 37 points and racked up 414 total yards of offense. Lafayette turned the ball over six times on the day, including a momentum killing interception in the endzone. Defensive end Harrison Green had the highlight of the day with a 24 yard pass completion out of fake punt at the end of the third quarter. Sophomore Sean O’Malley, lead the team with 111 yards through the air, while sophomore quarterback Cole Northrup led the team with seven yards rushing.

Women’s Tennis

Sept. 7, 8 @ Bucknell Fall invitational

In Singles: Junior Katie Hill won the consolation bracket of Flight 3, while sophomore teammate Alexa Cooke outright won the flight. In Flight 4, Ruthie Wilson, won the consolation final.
In Doubles: Sophomore Alexa Cooke and freshman Maureen McCormick outright won Flight 2, after defeating Hannah Davis and Megan Smith from Mount Saint Mary’s.
