Letter to the Editor: IFC’s commitment to changing the campus climate

Letter+to+the+Editor%3A+IFCs+commitment+to+changing+the+campus+climate

The Interfraternity Council (IFC) and all men’s fraternities wish to thank the Office of Educational Equity and Pards Against Sexual Assault (PASA) for hosting the #MeToo panel discussion on March 20 which raised awareness and educated the Lafayette community about sexual assault. A number of fraternity men attended the event to demonstrate our commitment to addressing this very serious issue on our college campus and to be involved in the discussion.

As fraternity men, we pledge to hold ourselves to a higher standard of personal conduct to our utmost ability. We recognize the need for progress. Some members of the fraternity community were surprised by the characterization of fraternity houses as “lion’s dens” and fraternity men as “problematic,” and we would like the Lafayette community to know that we take this criticism surrounding sexual misconduct seriously.

In the past, IFC has adopted sexual assault prevention pledges, required educational experiences for fraternity men and participated in campus-wide initiatives such as Take Back the Night. As social organizations, we will work vigorously with campus partners such as the Office of Educational Equity to ensure that all students feel safe and secure at the events that we sponsor.

In addition to these steps, we will to continue to require further workshops related to relationship and sexual violence, such as One Love, be actively involved in community discussions and coordinate with student-run sexual assault prevention and education organizations such as Pards Against Sexual Assault.

As the representative body of men’s fraternities, we are committed to creating a culture of accountability and supporting all victims of sexual violence. We look forward to partnering with a variety of allies to end sexual violence at Lafayette.
