Dancing into spring: The Lafayette Dance Company prepares for recital

This evening, Williams Center will play host to poetry in motion.

The Lafayette Dance Company will be giving their 11th Annual Spring Recital this evening at Williams Center for the Arts. In a first for the company, they will hold a repeat performance on Sunday in addition to tonight’s performance.

The Lafayette Dance Company is a fully student-run dance group. They perform across a wide range of styles, including jazz, tap, ballet, modern, hip-hop and a variety of cultural genres. The spring recital is the second big show of theirs for the year, along with its Fall Showcase, and they make several other appearances throughout the year at events such as “Jamnesty” and “Block PARTy”.

For this recital, they are preparing their best material.

“All performances will be unique and unlike the others,” Vice President of the Company Kristen Pogozelski ‘16 said. “There is a good mix of group numbers and soloists, all of whom are devoted and talented members of the Dance Company.”

The company has spent nearly the entire semester preparing for this weekend’s recital. “Choreographers begin teaching their pieces within the first two or three weeks of classes,” Pogozelski said.

“Before the first show, we run dress rehearsals all day in the Williams Center to practice the dances on-stage, get lighting and sound situated, and finish additional preparations,” she added.

“There is a lot behind-the- scenes work that goes into making the show a success,” Pogozelski said.

“We are truly lucky to have a group of people…who are drama-free and simply have a passion for dance regardless of experience level,” said Pogozelski, reflecting on the strength of the company.

The recital performances take place tonight at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Both will take place in Williams Center for the Arts. Admission is free with a Lafayette ID.
