After a long off-season, the Lafayette women’s soccer team is prepped and ready to go. With a disappointing 5-10-2 season last year, the Leopards are back on track with a win in their first game against Saint Peter’s 4-0.

“The spring season we went undefeated and won all of our games,” midfielder Kelly Boyce ’15 said. “This is a huge improvement after the fall season, which didn’t go the way we planned. We’re taking that and trying to run with it.”

Head coach Mick Statham echoes Boyce and believes the team was close on several occasions last year, but the games just didn’t go their way. After hard work the team didn’t concede a single goal all spring season.

“From a coaching standpoint, Columbia was our best game in the spring because all our goals were a result of things we’ve been specifically working on in training,” Statham said. “As a coach that’s rather pleasing when you see things taught during training translate fluidly on to the field.”

The senior class this year is strong and experienced, led by Jaclyn Giordano ‘15, a forward, who swiped third team All-Patriot League honors last season. The first game of last season the senior class had three goals and three assists combined. Other players to watch are Kaelin King ’17, Joanna Scotti ’17 and Danielle Sedillo ’17. Sedillo forced to play every minute of every game last year due to a senior goalkeeper’s injury, has a multitude of minutes under her belt. King and Scotti will be used a good deal on the attack side of the game, due to their stellar skill level and competitive attitudes.

“We always are excited to test the team against everybody else,” Coach Statham said when asked about what he’s looking forward to the most this season. “We train an awful lot in the offseason and the college season is very short so of course you have to take advantage of it when you’re in it.”
