24 hours of hectic filmmaking

Arts Society holds second annual film competition

Film lovers across our campus should prepare themselves, as this Saturday, May 3, there will be a screening held in Williams Center for the Arts for one of the more unique competitions at Lafayette: the 24-Hour Film Festival. In essence, they are five-minute films written, filmed, and produced by students in less than a day.

However, there is a special catch.

“Iit’s…an interesting challenge for those who enter, as they don’t know exactly what will be asked of them.” President of the Lafayette Arts Society Brent Horowitz ‘14 wrote in an email.

In addition to the public five-minute time limit, two particular restrictions are placed on all of the films: a specific line of dialogue must be said and a specific prop must be used in every film. The filmmakers will have no idea what they are to work with until the day filming begins – exactly 24 hours before the public screening.

It is a way of preventing the filmmakers from planning ahead and getting an unfair advantage. Those requirements aside, there are literally no restrictions on what the students can do with their films.

Whatever they do, they have from 2 p.m. on Friday to 2 p.m. on Saturday to finish their film and post it to YouTube. Later on Saturday, there will be a free screening with pizza, where the films will be shown and prizes handed out, including an audience-selected People’s Choice award.

The festival, which is on its second year, looks as though it is going to be popular.

“I think that [the festival will] get incorporated into the annual events by Arts Society,” Horowitz saidwrote.

For what attendees of the screening can expect going into the festival, “you can expect creativity and to laugh, essentially” Horowitz said.

The 24-Hour Film Festival, with its emphasis on creativity, will screen the submissions on Satuday at 6 p.m. in Williams 108.
