The Lafayette

Goodbye #rollpards

Student Government is initiating a program to find a replacement for “#rollpards”, Lafayette Athletics’ social media slogan, to a slogan which reflects a more unique identity for the school.

The #rollpards slogan is a variation of “Roll Tide,” the University of Alabama football team’s slogan. Many members of the Student Government believe this makes Lafayette seem indistinguishable, leading them to push the initiative to change the slogan.

“We see the current student slogan ‘rollpards’ as something that is derived from another school and isn’t unique to Lafayette,” President of Student Government Connor Heinlein ‘15 said. “We’re looking to come up with a new hashtag created and picked by Lafayette students so we [can] rally around something organic to Lafayette.”

Heinlein said Student Government has received positive feedback for the initiative. Director of Athletic Communications and Promotions Scott Morse supports the idea. Athletic Communications’ agreement to use the new hashtag on their social media is key to making sure that it becomes popular.

“If there is an overwhelming call to change and support different hashtags that represent Lafayette, our office will be open to getting behind that change just as we have been in the past,” Morse said in an email.

Student Government Representative Othman Guennoun ‘17, a member of the Student Life Committee, which is overseeing the initiative, explained the process to change the hashtag. Until Saturday, students will post hashtag ideas on the Student Government Facebook page and mention their Twitter account with possible new slogans.

The Student Life Committee will evaluate the submissions and, on Sunday, choose five entries based on the amount of attention they get and their appropriateness. Afterwards, a survey will be given to the Lafayette students to pick the new motto.

“By March 8, we’ll have a new slogan, and hopefully it will stick better than ‘roll pards’,” Guennoun said.

Heinlein said this initiative is important to expressing a unique Lafayette identity.

“In pursuit of [establishing the Lafayette’s uniqueness], there are several things we are looking to do, the hashtag being one of them, to try and reaffirm this commitment that the students have to the school and to each other,” Heinlein said.

Hashtags suggested to Student Government by Wednesday include “#workpardplaypard” by @StephanL1000 and “#roarpards” by @stavkariofillis on Twitter, and “#gopardorgohome” by Mara Natale ‘16 on Facebook.

However, not the entire Lafayette community is in support of the initiative.

“@LafStuGov #rollpards was used 68 times yesterday outside of Laf accounts. If it’s only your opinion that thinks it’s broke, don’t fix it,” @MarquisSword, a pro-Lafayette anonymous Twitter account, said.
