It was surely not the start the Lafayette women’s lacrosse team imagined to its season.
The Leopards (0-2) lost to Marist on Monday in the season opener and then to Delaware on Wednesday to begin their season with consecutive losses.
Senior midfielder Laura Kleiber scored four of the eight Lafayette goals against Marist in the 10-8 loss. The remaining four were scored by new members: two by midfielder Kirsten Wilhelmson and one apiece from Amanda Case and Alexis Thompson.
“I think our team overall played really well and I’m really optimistic about the season,” Kleiber said. “As long as we start finishing our shots and playing to our strengths I think we’ll do great.”
With respect to freshmen contributions, Kleiber mentioned that “nerves played a part in the first game… but we are young so the few upperclassmen on the team have huge leadership roles.”
The Leopards traveled to Delaware on Wednesday in search of their first victory but returned to Easton empty handed.
Prior to the game, Kleiber said, “For Delaware we want to come out strong and control the game. Delaware likes to run and gun and we are going to try and stop their fast breaks and make them work for their offensive looks.”
That plan, however, did not exactly come to fruition as the Blue Hens’ offense proved too strong. Senior goalkeeper Meghan Curtin recorded 13 saves but allowed 11 en route to an 11-6 loss. Delaware outshot Lafayette 31-21.
Six different players scored for Lafayette – Kleiber, Ana White ‘14, Katie Elander ‘15, Charlotte Avalone ‘16, Wilhelmson and Case. White led the stat sheet with four shots on target and five ground balls to go with her one goal.
Next up for Lafayette is an away game against Wagner tomorrow at 1 p.m in Staten Island, NY.
