Volleyball rancid

The seasons may change, but the results stay the same. Dating back to the 2010-2011 season, the Lafayette volleyball team is a combined 7-46 in Patriot League play.

Lafayette (9-12 overall, 1-9 Patriot League) continued the losing trend this past weekend, as it was beat in four sets by the Naval Academy and again in straight sets by Colgate University.

Especially shocking is the fact that Lafayette opened its season 8-2 before losing 11 of its next 12 matches.

Head Coach Terri Dadio Campbell declined comment when asked about the weekend results.

Navy took the first set 25-23 before Lafayette responded in set two by winning 25-23. It was all Navy from there on as it closed the final two sets 25-17 and 25-14.

Against reigning Patriot League champion Colgate, Lafayette lost 25-12, 25-12 and 25-8. Senior outside hitter Karissa Ciliento ‘14 did her part with five kills, four digs and two blocks but it simply was not enough.

Five league matches remain in the season and the team hopes to end its season positively. Lafayette plays Loyola Maryland today before squaring off with American University tomorrow.

11 of the 19 team members are underclassmen and just two are seniors. If Lafayette can develop its young talent, the arrow is pointing up for future years.

However strong Lafayette may start its season next year, it will again be confronted with its issues with league play.

Will 2014-2015 be the season the Leopards overcome their Patriot League hump?
